Powder and Bulk Solids Academy: Material Properties Testing and Results Application
This course will cover all the major material properties tests, and describe how the results are used for designing and improving equipment and systems for storage, flow, conveying, and air filtration of dry bulk solid materials.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Students will participate in an immersive course combining lecture and hands-on exploration in the full-scale lab at the Bulk Solids Innovation Center. Taught by industry veterans and university research experts, this course is intended for those that are looking to learn fundamentals of material property testing and how to apply the results.
Upon completing this course, students will understand:
- The basics of particulate material properties, including particle shape and particle size distribution
- Loose and packed bulk density, compressibility, true particle density
- Measurement of powder cohesive strength and wall friction using shear cells
- Conversion of shear testing data into flow functions, internal friction angles and wall friction angles
- Measurement of flow properties that change during stagnant storage
- Different types of shear testing devices (Jenike, Schulze, Brookfield, Freeman)
- Saltation and terminal velocity
- How material properties change based on storage, handling, and environment
- Which tests should be used to answer certain questions, and how to interpret the results
This course is recommended for any process engineers, chemists, and similar professionals who design materials or provide customer service to customers about their materials. Project engineers, chemists, and operations personnel who are responsible for designing, operating, or improving equipment or systems for bulk solids handling are encouraged to attend. Anyone in sales, management, or support roles who will benefit from basic understanding and terminology.

The course is comprised of four half-day sessions. Sessions are held online. Live participation is expected. Should a student be required to miss a session, recordings of the session will be available for review.
Format: Live, online hosted through Zoom
Upon registration, students will be sent details in a confirmation email on how to access the learning management system for course materials and Zoom live session details.
Course fee includes access to online learning management system, course instruction, and digital materials. Payment is required at time of registration. All major credit cards are accepted.
Multi-registrant discounts are available! A discounted rate is offered for companies sending multiple attendees. Three registrants from the same company will receive a 50% discount on the third registration fee. Four registrants from the same company will receive a free registration on the fourth registrant. For companies sending more than four employees, discounts will be applied in the same increments as indicated above.

The online training software operates on any Mac or PC system. Your system must have speakers with sound enabled. You will need a microphone (webcam optional) to participate in the program. You will need an internet connection, broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE) is recommended.
You will need to download Zoom, a free video conferencing software to participate in the live activities. You can do this from the Zoom web site, or you will be prompted to download it prior to the course. Please review the Zoom system requirements.
