Powder and Bulk Solids Academy: Overview of Bulk Solids Processing, Flow, and Air Filtration
Registration for this program is closed. Please contact profed@k-state.edu for inquiries.
This course provides an overview of powder and bulk solids handling. Flow of material through silos, bins, chutes, feeders, screws, and process equipment will be emphasized, with a practical understanding of how solid material properties are used to design reliable equipment and processes.
The following topics will be discussed and demonstrated:
- Design of hoppers and silos
- Chutes
- Gravity flow aid and discharge devices
- Dust collection and particulate air filtration systems
- Valve sizing and selection
- Devices for handling small bags, bulk bags, boxes, and drums
- Truck and Railcar unloading
- Volumetric and Gravimetric (Loss-In-Weight) Feeders
- Level and Inventory Measurement of Solids
- Mixers and Mixing
- Size reduction / Grinders / Mills
- Particle enlargement / Agglomeration
- Sifters and Screeners
- Comparison of various Mechanical Conveying methods such as rigid and flexible screw conveyors, cable and chain drag conveyors, and bucket elevators
- Comparison of various Pneumatic conveying methods such as dilute phase, dense phase, vacuum, and pressure systems
- Real world issues such as process safety, gravity flow stoppages, segregation, and particle degradation
The course design includes lecture material on each topic, along with practical hands-on demonstrations of each technology and equipment. The Powder and Bulk Solids Academy is a real-time online format, using the Bulk Solids Innovation Center's full-size and scale models. Participants interactively see and discuss how materials behave in each type of equipment.
This course is recommended for any engineers who need an overview or refresher about dry bulk solids handling. It is suggested for anyone in sales, management, maintenance, or support roles who will benefit from an overview of solids handling technology and terminology.

ABOUT THE POWDER AND BULK SOLIDS ACADEMY
Comprised of three separate courses, the Academy provides detailed instruction from industry leading experts on bulk solids handling, conveying and storage. Courses may be taken individually or as a series. For attendees registering for all three courses, a 20% discount of the total cost will be applied to the third course - a nearly $600 savings! The other courses included in the Powder and Bulk Solids Academy include Basics of Pneumatic Conveying and Material Properties Testing and Results Application. The 20% discount on the total cost of the Academy is not stackable with discount codes or the multi-registrant discount. A 20% discount code will be sent to those eligible before registering for the third course.
The courses will be approximately half lecture and half actual demonstrations using the BSIC full-scale systems and components. Courses are offered live and provide opportunity for discussion between instructor and students. If a student is unable to attend one of the sessions, recordings will be available.
Students are not required to have any previous experience. Engineers looking for an overview or refresher on bulk solids topics, as well as anyone in Sales, Management, Maintenance, or Support Roles who will benefit from basic understanding and terminology are welcome to attend.
